What can I expect to do in this role?
You will:
• enforce the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations in workplaces
• conduct inspections, investigations and quality assurance assessments
• provide professional advice to staff and management
• gather evidence and prepare engineering reports
• act as an expert witness in court and as an occupational health and safety expert/advisor in the field
• issue orders, and promote safe working practices and conditions with workplace parties via the Internal Responsibility System (IRS)
How do I qualify?
Mandatory requirements:
• you are a registered Professional Engineer licensed to practice in the Province of Ontario within three months of the posting date of this job advertisement
• you have a degree in engineering with specialization in mining
• you have a valid class “G” driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario and ability to travel within service area
• you have the ability to work after hours/on call
Technical expertise:
• you have expert knowledge and extensive experience in mining engineering including ground control, ventilation, diesel exhaust, explosives, and control of water
• you have knowledge of discipline-related theories, principles and practices including those related to Occupational Health and Safety
• you have the ability to keep up to date on trends and developments in engineering and the health and safety field
• ability to plan and undertake high level, complex engineering inspections and investigations in a wide variety of workplaces, perform workplace audits
Interpersonal and communication skills:
• you have well developed interpersonal skills with experience in consulting, advisory and relationship management
• you have the ability to communicate complex technical and professional matters clearly and tactfully in stressful situations
Other general skills:
• you have the ability to plan and manage an often unpredictable workload
• you have the ability to work well under pressure in a high-profile and time sensitive environment
• you have the ability to interpret and enforce legislation and expert knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations in workplaces
• you have the ability to identify hazards and contraventions of applicable legislation
• you have the ability to conduct reviews of others work and provide authoritative, reliable and defensible assessments/advice and recommendations
• you are proficient in using a computer and related software to produce analysis, reports and a variety of materials
